In this article, Bullivant explores the Catholic concept and practice of musical oratory or oratorio which was being undertaken at the Birmingham Oratory of St Philip Neri in the years immediately before the composition of The Dream of Gerontius. She argues that this practice provides a fresh perspective for understanding the work's generic ambiguities and spiritual context.
